Cancer Genetic ECHO: Extending Genetic Services to Maine’s Colorectal Cancer Patients and their At-Risk Family Members

About This Grant:

Provision of cancer genetic counseling and testing services can save lives for individuals with or at increased risk for hereditary forms of colorectal cancer (CRC) through provision of early (i.e., often beginning in one’s 20s) and frequent (i.e., every 1-2 years) colonoscopy screening. However, because access to specialty-trained cancer genetics experts in Maine (and nationally) is limited, many are unaware of their risk and need for high-risk colonoscopy surveillance. The overall goal of this project is to implement an Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (Project ECHO®) hub-and-spoke telementoring model to improve point-of–care access to CRC-related genetic risk assessment and counseling within MaineHealth community oncology practices, with the aim of expanding to statewide participation and reducing the Maine CRC burden.
