About This Grant:
With four locations across northern Maine, Aroostook County Action Program (ACAP) leads or collaborates to provide services that support, empower and improve lives.
Through this grant, ACAP seeks to prevent and reduce tobacco use by equipping young individuals with the skills to lead prevention curriculum sessions among their peers. Participants will receive guidance on advocacy strategies, including peer-to-peer approaches, fostering the development of their confidence, knowledge, and leadership abilities.
By amplifying the engagement of younger Mainers, this initiative seeks to actively counter the harmful narrative promoted by commercial tobacco – that a sense of belonging is linked to smoking cigarettes.
For every 100,000 Maine residents, approximately 70 new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed each year, which is 25% higher than the US average. Maine Cancer Foundation is proud to support this vital prevention work in Aroostook County.
