Reducing the Risk of Lung Cancer from Exposure to Radon Gas Within a School Community

About This Grant:

The Maine Indoor Air Quality Council is piloting a novel strategy to enhance awareness and reduce exposure to radon, a known indoor carcinogen, within the school community. This project will focus on a selected school, providing students with age-appropriate education on radon, its link to lung cancer, the importance of testing, and strategies for reducing indoor radon levels. Students will act as citizen scientists, conducting radon testing at their school with oversight from the Maine Radon Section and licensed professionals. Following state radon section recommendations, the project will primarily focus on radon-in-air testing, with additional testing and possible mitigation of well water for households with extremely high radon levels.
