Preventing Skin Cancer in the Unhoused Population

About This Grant:

The United Community Living Center (UCLC) in Augusta, Maine is leading a project focused on skin cancer prevention and treatment for unhoused individuals in Augusta and surrounding communities. Through its community center and street outreach efforts, UCLC works directly with members of the unhoused community to reduce the risk of skin cancer in this vulnerable population. The project includes education on prevention, distribution of sunscreen and protective items such as sun shirts, hats, and sunglasses, and access to clinician visits with dermoscopy-enhanced exams when needed. In addition, as one of the few cooling centers in the Augusta area, UCLC provides critical refuge from the sun, further supporting the health and well-being of those it serves.
