Preventing Cancer in Maine:

Half of all cancers in Maine could be prevented with a dedicated effort to improve personal health and avoid known causes of cancer, including tobacco, excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays, viral infection and obesity. 

Cancer Prevention Facts:

  • Lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer in Maine, and our lung cancer rates are consistently higher than the US average.
  • 1 in 4 Mainers use tobacco, and half of all Maine residents are former or current cigarette smokers.
  • 1/3 of all cancer cases in the US can be attributed to obesity, physical inactivity or poor nutrition. 65% of Mainers are either overweight or obese
