UMaine Law School Seminar "Genetic Information: Who owns it and who should have access to it?"

Scientists now know that genes do more than carry heritable traits; they control the minute-to minute regulation of all life processes. Genetic information from the Human Genome Project and other related research efforts is being released at an extraordinarily rapid rate. The simultaneous development of biochemical screening and detection methods for particular genes presents profound ethical and legal issues for individuals, families and society. The availability of genetic information, and the implications to its access, are complex involving individual rights to privacy, intellectual property rights, and forensic DNA typing. This seminar presented the underlying science and introduced legal and ethical issues to attorneys, legislators, and law school students.
