Oncology Clinical Research Center

Start-up grant funding is requested to establish a new Oncology Clinical Research Center at the Cancer Care Center at Pen Bay Medical Center. The center would have the capacity to offer clinical trials to cancer patients in the Pen Bay Healthcare service area – Knox and Waldo counties and parts of Lincoln County, including several remote islands.

The proposed Oncology Clinical Research Center will enable cancer patients in our area to participate in cancer trials close to their residences, near to families and friends, in familiar surroundings, with easy access to their doctors, nurses and other care providers. The nearest locations for clinical trials are Brunswick and Augusta, at least an hour’s drive for most of the residents in Pen Bay’s service area. The new Oncology Research Center would be staffed by an Oncology Principal Investigator and an Oncology Research Coordinator. With grant funding, both individuals would be provided with quality education in the coordination of clinical research, including Good Clinical Practice, their respective responsibilities, the informed consent process, safety reporting and source documentation.
