Evaluation of Financial Assistance Program

The purpose of the evaluation is to identify barriers to accessing chemotherapy or radiation therapy in Eastern Maine as described by the patients themselves (users of the BCWCRC's financial assistance program). We will also ask patients for their observations, insights, and recommendations about specific barriers and what can be done to eliminate or reduce their effects. Based on a model adapted by the Agency for Healthcare Research (2002), we will identify entry, structural, and cultural barriers. For the purposes of this evaluation, we will focus on structural barriers such as transportation and housing - both essential to accessing cancer treatment by rural cancer patients and their families. We also hope to hone in on the specific way our financial assistance program has helped the individuals who received that assistance. Many of the people who receive financial assistance from the BCWCRC do not take advantage of the other programs that we offer and part of the evaluation will be to address why that is so.
