Cancer: There is Hope Here in Washington County

This grant will support an annual educational conference for cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers for the 17th year with Maine Cancer Foundation support entitled: "Cancer: There is Hope Here in Washington County."

The burden of high cancer incidence and mortality rates in Washington County is compounded by high poverty rates and limited treatment, hospice care, and patient education resources. Transportation to the region's main cancer treatment center in Brewer, Cancer Care of Maine, is a major barrier.

The goal of the conference is to enhance the participants' quality of life through improved knowledge of treatment and support resources, enhanced skills in accessing peer and community resources, and better emotional adjustment to living with cancer. The grantee, Regional Medical Center at LubeclHealthWays (RMCL), is a non-profit, federally qualified community health center which was founded in 1971 and provides outpatient family medical and dental care to about 4,000 clients annually in the southeast portion of the county. It also provides home health care on a county-wide basis, including significant numbers of patients with cancer. RMCL staff will lead the collaborative efforts as in the past to develop the conference program.

The planning group will include at least two cancer survivors and representation from the Down East Hospice Volunteers, Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center, and Down East Community Hospital. The plan will get approval from local cancer support groups. Based on evaluation survey input from past participants, the day-long program favored by consumers includes two keynote speakers to cover issues in current cancer treatment and a window on treatment innovations. In the afternoon, a discussion panel of cancer survivors and cancer patient caregivers are implemented to provide practical models from peers in problem solving and emotional support and inspiration of hope worthy of the conference title. Our goal is to serve 90-100 participants, including about 25-30% of new attendees.
