Cancer Genetics and Familial Predisposition Project

MCREF is the major funder, along with Maine Medical Center and the Maine Center for Cancer Medicine, of Maine's first familial predisposition project. The project seeks to identify people who may be at an increased risk of developing cancer due to the evidence of cancer in family members. Research has uncovered flawed genes that are the precursors of disease. Many of these genes run in families. When at-risk persons are identified, steps can be taken to insure early and frequent screenings. These screenings would hope to identify the cancer at its earliest, and most treatable, form. In some cases, medication can reduce the incidence of disease. At-risk

persons may also be eligible to participate in clinical trials, and prevention studies.
